オウム、インコの仲間
オウム、インコの仲間約330種は、分類学的にオウム目（もく）に属します。かつてはこの大きなグループは、オウム科として一つにまとめられていました。近年では、この大きなグループを、ヒインコ科、オウム科、インコ科の3科に分けて分類する研究者が多くいます。分類学的な立場によっては、2科（オウム科、インコ科）と考える研究者もいます。
オウム、インコの仲間は、他のグループの鳥とは明らかに異なった共通性を持ち、グループとしてのまとまりが見られます。この仲間の大きさは、体長8cmのルリハインコから102cmのコンゴウインコ類まで大きな差はありますが、短くカギ形の嘴と上嘴に臘膜（ろうまく）を持つこと、首は短く体が丸味をおびること、足は短く前趾2本、後趾2本の対趾足（たいしそく）であること、一般的に言って羽装が色彩豊かであることなどの共通点が見られます。
このグループの分類域は、主に熱帯地域に生息する種が多く、アフリカ、南部アジア、オーストラリア、南アメリカに分布しています。食物は、多くの種では果実食ですが、種子、蕾や緑の葉なども食べます。セキセイインコのようにもっぱら草の種子を食べるもの、ゴシキセイガイインコのように花蜜、花粉を食べるもの、アカガシラケラインコのように、キノコ類、コケ類を主食とする種もあります。
このグループの営巣場所は樹洞です。岩の間や地上に営巣する種もありますが、一方サトウチョウのように巣材を集めて小鳥のような巣を作る種もあります。穴の中に巣を作る鳥たちと共通して、このグループは模様のない白色の卵を産みます。ヒナは丸裸で生まれ、親によって育てられます。オウム、インコは飼い鳥として古来から人間と繋がりが深く、それは色彩の豊かさと動作の愛らしさや、よく馴れる習性によるものです。決して鳴き声を賞でるものではありません。
グールドは93種121点のオウム目鳥類の石版手彩色図版を出版しました。その半分はオーストラリアの種で53種64点を「オーストラリア鳥類図譜」で描きました。「アジア鳥類図譜」には10種15点、「ニューギニア鳥類図譜」には38種47点の図版を描いています。種数よりも図版点数が多いのは、グールドの時代の分類では種と考えられていたものが、今日では種が統合されたためです。
