ハチドリとタイヨウチョウ
ハチドリ類(320種)とタイヨウチョウ類(105種)は、分類学的にはとても類縁の遠いグループです。ハチドリは、南北アメリカ大陸に分布しアマツバメ目に属しますが、タイヨウチョウはアジア、オーストラリア、アフリカに分布しスズメ目に属します。宮沢賢治の童話「ヨダカの星」では、ハチドリはヨタカの弟のハチスズメ(蜂雀)という名前で登場します。当時ハチドリは、蜂雀と呼ばれていました。ヨダカとハチスズメとカワセミは兄弟という設定ですが、これは分類学的には的を射ています。一方タイヨウチョウは、鳥類の約半数を占める最も進化していると考えられるスズメ目の一員です。
類縁関係の離れたこの２つのグループには、共通点があります。それは、羽装に金属光沢をもち、光の角度によって色彩が変化します。どちらも花の蜜を主な餌とし、舌の先端がブラシ状になっており、舌の中央には溝があってストローで吸うように花蜜を効率よく取り込むことができます。両者は、小形の昆虫も盛んに食べますが、飛びながら捕食するのも似ています。また、一般的にどちらもごく小形の鳥類です。
ハチドリは、その英名のハミングバードに示されるように、迅速な羽搏きによるブーンとうなるような羽音で知られますが、足は弱く歩くのには適しません。タイヨウチョウは体の割に力強い足をもっています。
グールドは、ハチドリの輝く羽装を何とか表現しようとして、図版に工夫をこらしています。今日においてもグールドの描いたハチドリ類の図版の美しさの評価は、高まるばかりです。グールドは、1849～61年にかけて「ハチドリ科鳥類図譜」5巻を出版しました。グールドの死後1880～87年に友人のシャープによって「補遺」が出版されました。タイヨウチョウ類は「アジア鳥類図譜」、「オーストラリア鳥類図譜」、「ニューギニア及びパプア諸島鳥類図譜」の中に何種類か描かれています。
