エキゾチック・オーニソロジィ
オーニソロジィ（Ornithology）の本来の意味は鳥類学ですが、ここではエキゾチック・オーニソロジィ（Exotic Ornithology）は、「異国情緒のある鳥たち」という意味で使っています。
昆虫や魚類などの他の動物群と比べて、鳥類は効率よく飛翔するという形態上の制約があるため、9,000種類の鳥をざっと見渡しても、あまり突飛な形をした種は見当たりません。一般的に鳥という動物は大体同じような形をしています。しかし、鳥は視覚の動物だといわれるように、羽装の色彩の豊かさと複雑さは時には目を見張るものがあります。 グールドの住んでいたイギリスや私たちの住む日本の気候帯は温帯地域です。温帯地域の鳥類は、比較的地味で落着いた羽装の鳥が多いのですが、熱帯の鳥にはびっくりするほど派手な羽装の種がいます。グールドの時代は、世界の様々な地域から実に沢山の動植物が英国にもたらされています。エキゾチックな生き物は、人々の好奇心をかきたたせたことでしょう。
グールドの鳥類図譜群にも、キヌバネドリ、オオハシ、ハチドリ、アメリカ産ウズラなど羽装が特に美しいグループのモノグラフがあります。オーストラリア、ニューギニアの鳥類も美しい種がたくさんあります。ここではその中から20種を選んでエキゾチック・オーニソロジィとしました。
