Empress Brilliant
Heliodoxa imperatrix

A Monograph of the Trochilidae, or Family of Humming-birds
Vol.4 - Plate No. 234

Length: 16 cm (male), 13 cm (female)

The Empress Brilliant is a shiny green hummingbird found in Colombia and Ecuador, and the "Empress" of its name refers to the Empress of Napoleon III. The male has ruby coloured feathers on its throat. In this illustration both male and female have yellow bellies, but this is probably an error; in reality their bellies are dark grey.
