Marvellous Spatuletail
Loddigesia mirabilis

A Monograph of the Trochilidae, or Family of Humming-birds
Vol.3 - Plate No. 161

Length: 16 cm (male), 10 cm (female)

The Marvellous Spatuletail is an extremely rare hummingbird found only in local areas of northern Peru. As can be seen in this illustration, they possess two tail feathers of astounding shape, their elongated stems crossing each other, with tips shaped somewhat like rackets. Only male birds have these extraordinary tails, the female's tails being comparably shorter, slightly widening at their ends. Only male birds are depicted in this illustration.
