Mandarin Duck
Aix galericulata

The Birds of Asia
Vol.7 - Plate No. 69
Length: 45 cm
The Mandarin Duck is a very beautiful species of the duck family. One who chances to see the male would never forget its beauty. The triangular, decorative feathers growing from both wings resemble in shape the leaves of a ginkgo tree, and are called "icho-bane" (ginkgo feathers) in Japanese. The Mandarin Duck breeds in Southeast Asia and Japan, and those from the Eurasian continent migrate to Japan or southern regions during the winter. After the breeding season the male's loses its beautiful feathers and its colour becomes more muted like the female (eclipse plumage).
