Red-billed Blue Magpie
Urocissa erythrorhyncha

The Birds of Asia
Vol.5 - Plate No. 47

Length: 69 cm

The Red-billed Blue Magpie is a beautiful bird related to the crow, and is found in the mountain forests from China to the Indo-Chinese Peninsula as residents. A crow's relative may suggest black plumage, but actually many birds in this group are beautifully coloured. Although this species do not inhabit Japan, they have been known in Japan from ancient times through Chinese paintings. They often live in small flocks, and are omnivorous.
