Calyptorhychus magnificus

The Birds of Australia
Vol.5 Plate No. 7

Length: 60 cm

The Red-tailed Black Cockatoo is a large cockatoo found in the forests of Australia. The male is a purplish black with streaks of vivid red in the inside of its tails, but this red cannot be seen when the tail is folded. The female is also a purplish black, but has orange-yellow specks all over. They create their nests in tree hollows, scraping the inside of the trees with their beaks to make a cushion in the bottom, and lay one egg. The male brings food while the female incubates the egg.
